Online or Face-to-face? Hybrid learning!

Since the outbreak of the COVID19 pandemic, we have got so used to e-learning that now it is hard to think how we could ever go back to the old face-to-face formula.

Many educational organizations in the world have converted regular in-person course into online activities. So, it is not too much to say that digital tools and platforms have saved the future of education.

However, the transition to e-learning has not been easy for everyone. Now, with hindsight, we should think of moving towards other ways of doing things so that online courses are not so hard for students and educators. According to a recent OpinionWay survey, 52% of students and teachers find the move online very hard. For teachers it was not an easy situation neither. From one day to the next, they had to improvise courses by using new digital tools they knew nothing about before. So it was very difficult to keep the students' attention but also to make the course interesting and stimulating.

For 62% of the students, there was a clear lack of preparation. And even if 77% of teachers say they are comfortable with this new online format, this is not the case for everyone. There is still some reluctance and this makes it difficult for others.

Perhaps it is time to reflect about the best methods to make new forms of learning during pandemic periods easier for everyone. More than half of the respondents to the OpinionWay survey think it is a good idea to continue with online courses. And 63% of students think that online education will continue even after the health crisis. Certainly, e-learning has got a future in our new educational system; it is up to us if it will be bright or boring.

The best option seems to be hybrid learning. The fact that students will be able to follow both online and face-to-face classes will definitely be an advantage for everyone. On one hand, teachers and students will enjoy in-person interaction, which often facilitates explanations and active learning, compared to online courses; on the other hand, it will be possible to take distance learning courses that are extremely practical in terms of time and space.

This new hybrid method could therefore be centered on the students’ ideas and active participation to make e-learning more motivating and appealing.
